DP district chairman John Sebaana Kizito has summoned the bickering members of the Makindye East branch to a series of meetings to defuse misunderstandings that led to the suspension of MP Michael Mabikke as general secretary of the branch.

The executive suspended Mabikke on Tuesday, accusing him of indiscipline and abrogation of the party constitution.

Sebaana, who is also Kampala mayor, has made frantic steps to reconcile the members, dispatching letters on Tuesday night to summon the protagonists to a meeting on Friday at an undisclosed venue in Kampala.

Sources said Sebaana had called a branch general assembly on Sunday at Gaba beach but called it off; choosing to meet the two sides first, each group separately. The sources said Sebaana wants tempers to cool first before the two warring sides meet.

Mabikke could not be reached yesterday for comment. The branch publicity secretary, Siraje Lubwama, confirmed that reconciliatory meetings had been called but declined to disclose the venue.

He said the branch welcomed Sebaana’s initiative and would respect the outcome of the reconciliation process.

“If he (Sebaana) says we are wrong, we are ready to apologise but we are sure we are 100 percent correct,” Lubwama said.

“We have heard him say in an interview with a radio station that we are hobnobbing with Fox Odoi (the presidential assistant on legal affairs) but he cannot sustain that lie for long. It has exposed him further and helped us understand that he cannot speak any truths,” he said.

The split comes barely a month after DP President general Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere and breakaway faction leader Francis Bwengye had reconciled.
