TWENTY school girls who were abducted on October 10, 1996 from St Mary’s College Aboke by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels have returned home after eight years in captivity in Sudan.

This was revealed during commemoration prayers held at the school on Sunday.

The theme of this year’s prayers was forgiveness in search for peace in northern Uganda. Monsignor Lawrence Okucu of Lira Catholic Diocese led the prayers.

Charlotte Awino moved people to tears during her testimony about the abduction.

Awino said five girls were killed by the rebels and six were still in captivity in the bush.
She identified them as Judith Enang, Brenda Atto, Hellen Namu, Jessica Angu and Janet Aber.

“I am a former student of this school and I love this school so much. Thanks for your prayers and I am glad I am back home in Uganda after eight years in the bush,” Awino said.

Ten returned this year after the UPDF troops shelled rebel positions.

Awino was accompanied by seven other girls rescued recently. Two of them were pregnant.
