SIR— Perhaps corruption is not all that new in many African societies. But the magnitude matters. Chinua Achebe in his book No Longer At Ease talks about the self-styled Ibo man, Obi Okwonkwo, who returned from England where he studied English instead of Law as required by his tribesmen to help them fight land disputes. Obi resisted taking bribes, some in kind, only to succumb to a small one which caused him a lot of embarrassment and trouble.
