SIE— Dr Sylvia Tamale, the dean of the Faculty of Law at Makerere University, seems to be a person who has a penchant for controversy on sex.
Recent press reports quote her as saying she wants the age of consent lowered to 16.
Well, that’s ridiculous, given that by Ugandan standards, even at 18, most people are still at school and biologically and psychologically immature. Their ability to make sober decisions is minimal. Reducing the age of consent to 16 is a recipe for disaster since it makes it even easier now for more sexual exploitation of teenagers.
It’s true that sexual intercourse is not only for procreation but also recreation. as she states. However, its abuse has had massive social setbacks on society, more so on the young. Actually, many who innocently indulge in early sex often get permanent psychological scars. Would Tamale let her children have sex at 16 since it is for recreation?
