SIR— On Wednesday, I witnessed an incident at the Lugogo Mall that left me astonished.
A mother locked up her child in a car and went shopping in the malls. The car was reg. number UAE 445M. It was a hot afternoon and soon the child began fighting for fresh air. Several people came by to help, but short of breaking the windows, there was nothing they could do.
The manager on duty at Game store made several announcements over the public address system in the store to no avail. Certainly the mother was not shopping in Game. Meanwhile, a small crowd was growing around the small car, watching helplessly.
Mercifully, it began to rain and this cooled the car. A few minutes into the rain, the mother came back with her shopping!
I commend the manager of Game for the announcements he made to get to the kid’s mum. If the mum had been shopping in Game, she would have certainly heard and come to the rescue. I commend also the staff who were attentive and able to notice the kid in distress.
I suggest to Shoprite to install a public address system in their store also. The coming Christmas season is bound to be a busy time. We had better be ready for incidents like this.
As for parents, if you cannot go shopping with your child, please don’t leave it in the car. That heat can kill your child in no time.
