A TOTAL of 173 prisoners are to be freed under a presidential pardon issued on Tuesday.

President Yoweri Museveni pardoned prisoners from different stations under the categories of inmates convicted of being idle and disorderly and petty offenders who are left with a quarter of their sentence.

Others were prisoners with serious illnesses, the over-aged and breast-feeding mothers on minor offences and left with a quarter of their sentences.

The release of the prisoners started on Monday, assistant commissioner for prisons David Nsalasatta said yesterday.

Nsalasatta said the freed prisoners were given money to transport them from Luzira to their homes.

Authorities had complained of congestion in the prisons. Courts have repeatedly complained of a huge backlog of cases and many suspects on remand.

Museveni last issued a pardon in 2001 for former central province governor in Idi Amin’s regime Nassur Abdallah who was on death row.
