THE expulsion of Rwandan diplomat was over espionage, the Government said yesterday.

The sources said three UPDF soldiers were arrested for selling vital intelligence information to the Rwandan government.

The suspects were Peter Ongom, John Barihaihi and Sam Tugume.

They were charged in the Court Martial at Makin-dye with treachery and disclosure of information to unauthorised persons.

Army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza said, “It is the link between the trio and the Rwandan diplomat which resulted in the arrest of the trio.”

Late last month, Uganda expelled Rwanda’s administrative attaché Jimmy Uwuizeye and in retaliation, Rwanda expelled Uganda’s First Secretary in Kigali, John Cliff Birungi.

Earlier, state minister for information Nsaba Buturo said the envoy was expelled over allegations of supporting the People’s Redemption Army. The local press yesterday said the trio supplied information to Rwanda’s Chief of Military Intelligence Col. Patrick Karegeya.
