By M. Kyomuhendo THE Police is to deploy at campaign venues in Mbarara municipality following clashes between supporters of two candidates vying for the mayoral seat. The officer in-charge of duties at Mbarara police station, Patrick Bingi, on Sunday said at least eight to 10 armed policemen would be deployed at every rally. He said another force of about 20 men would also be put on a 24-hour standby to avert any possible clashes in the area. About six people on Saturday were injured in different clashes between supporters of Wilson Tumwine, a contestant and the incumbent mayor, Robert Rutehenda. Each candidates claims his supporters are being intimidated and victimised. “My supporters are being beaten by supporters of Rutehenda. We are compiling evidence and my task force will decide on what steps to take,” Tumwine told The New Vision. He said some of his supporters were beaten and injured in Nyamitanga division. Rutehenda also said, “We have enough evidence that Tumwine’s supporters are traumatising our people. we shall take all the necessary legal action should the habit continue.” The Police have advised residents not to take the law for granted.
