By Bernard ByarabahaTHE Roman Archbishop of Mbarara Diocese, Paul Bakyenga, has appealed to President Yoweri Museveni (left) to review the Statute seeking to register the Church as a non-governmental organisation (NGO).“This policy of making the Church a non-governmental organisation will cripple the activities of the Church. Imagine a bishop like me going to the local council officials to seek an order to perform such a service. We shall refuse this. I appeal to the President to intervene,” Bakyenga said.He made the appeal on February 17 during the service and confirmation ceremony of students of Mbarara University of Science and Technology held in the Pharmacology main lecture theatre.Under the new non-governmental organisation Statute, all religious institutions are required to register as non-governmental organisations and seek licenses before beginning their operations.Ends
