By Emmy Allio The governments of Uganda and Sudan have distributed to the United Nations Security Council a joint statement they signed recently in Kampala in which they are coordinating efforts to end Joseph Kony’s legacy. The two parties said they would “spare no efforts to safeguard and maintain the safety of innocent civilians” and seek the safe repatriation of abducted children, with the help of humanitarian organisations. The statement, signed by Sudanese Minister of Information and Communication, Mahdi Ibrahim Mohammed, and Ugandan Minister for Foreign Affairs James Wapakhabulo in Kampala on March 13, was given to the UN Security Council at the request of Uganda’s ambassador to the UN Semakula Kiwanuka. It said the two countries had pursued all means available to peacefully solve the problem of insecurity, violence and child abduction by the LRA.The joint statement said the meeting of Sudanese President Umar Hasan al-Bashir with Museveni in Khartoum on January 12, had renewed their will to restore peace.
