By Alfred WasikeANNA Mkapa, Tanzania’s First Lady and Maria Nyerere, wife of Tanzania’s first President, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, have hailed Uganda’s First Lady, Janet Museveni, for improving the welfare of Uganda’s orphans. The ladies, in Uganda for the Great Lakes Symposium, which recognised Nyerere’s efforts to pacify this troubled part of Africa, expressed their gratitude, on Thursday, when they visited a housing project for orphans and disadvantaged people in Nangabo, Wakiso district. Mrs Museveni is famous for establishing the Uganda Women’s Efforts to Save Orphans (UWESO) in 1987. The organisation has helped hundreds of children orphaned by the civil strife which gripped Uganda for decades and the HIV/AIDS scourge which exploded in the early 1980s.
