By Nicholas KajobaA total of 56 illegal sets of fishing gear have been confiscated from fishermen from various landing sites in Mukono District in the past three months. The fish-nets were mainly got from Ntojere, Mubale and Nairambhi Islands in Buvuma County, Mukono District.Illegal fish gear has rampantly been used by fishermen to catch young fish in Lake Victoria waters. Romulus Mulambi, Mukono District fisheries officer, said the 56 illegal nets were found after getting a tip off from some fishermen on the Islands.“We managed to confiscate that fishing gear after getting tip off from some residents on landing sites,” he said.Mulambi said that his department and district council is sensitising Islanders to refrain from illegal fishing methods that cause the depletion of fish in lakes. He said that total of 20 tonnes of immature fish have been impounded in the district over the past six months. “We have so far impounded 20 tonnes of immature fish in the district and burnt some of them. We appeal to local leaders to work with us in order to stamp out illegal fishing activities in the district,” he said.Ends
