By Egessa HajusuThe Special Revenue Protection Service (SRPS) operatives have donated six bicycles to cigarette smugglers in Busia in an effort to woo them from the illegal trade. The donation follows a June incident in which the SRPS impounded six bicycles and 15 cartons of Supermatch cigarettes in Masafu sub-county and pledged to buy bicycles and give to the victims on condition that they desist from the illegal business.Lt Jimmy Azisu, the in-charge SRPS eastern region, told the “reformed” smugglers that smuggling was a disease to the people and economy of Uganda. He said it had denied the country money through tax evasion and that this had incapacitated government to provide citizens with social services.Azisu warned smugglers not to breach the contract and use the bicycles in smuggling. “We shall meet in the field if you don’t respect the agreement,” he told them.
