MEMBERS of the parliamentary social services committee has criticised the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and district inspectors of schools for the continued exam leakages around the country.

“UNEB sets the exams and carries out the distribution and the district inspectors of schools are responsible for appointing the district invigilators and supervisors,” they said.

The committee, chaired by Tororo woman MP Dorothy Hyuha oversees the operations of the ministry of Education and education agencies like UNEB and the National curriculum Development centre.

The committee represented by Budadiri East MP Wambi-Kibaale and Kapelabyong MP Johnson Malinga, both former teachers, said on Thursday that exam malpractices were enhanced by poor teachers’ salaries.

“The teachers get meagre salaries and they lose morale. This leads them into being easily bribed because they are not paid in time,” they said.

The committee members were addressing chief administrative officers, district education officers, district inspectors of schools and head teachers at a seminar on improving performance in education at Kyambogo University.

The vice-chancellor, who is also chairman UNEB, Prof. Lutalo Bbosa attended the seminar.
