THE Government has sued 19 private companies for failure to pay for goods it supplied them under the sh14b Japanese non-project grant.

The companies that have been dragged to court by the Ministry of Finance include General Machinery; Tank Hill Quarry, Tororo Steel works; Baggery Trading Co, Mpiima Trading Co, Oscar Industries, National Council of Sports, Marks Pharmacueticals, Dick Kizito and Mukyo enterprises.

Others are Seki Trading company, Highway Motor, Kimbuguma Coffee, GM Company, Spear Motors, BTS, Uganda Baati, Jusiba Pharmaceuticals and Sembule Steel Mills.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Chris Kassami told the Public Accounts Committee on Thursday that this followed failure by the companies mentioned to exhibit seriousness in paying for the goods supplied to them.

Kassami said the Japanese government had given the Uganda Government various products for sale to the private sector, and that the proceeds would be used to balance the budget.

The products which were imported through Crown Agents included vehicles, tractors, tyres, motor cycles, bicycles, stationery and industrial machinery.

The companies were given goods upon depositing 20% of the required amount.

Kassami told the committee that several reminders to the companies in question did not bear any positive response, causing the Government to take the matter to the courts of law.

The committee asked Kassami to do everything in his power to recover the money from the companies.
