SOCCER fans will be treated to a new form of entertainment starting this weekend.
The entertainment comes in form of a comic magazine, Supa Strikas, to be launched on Sunday.
Supa Strikas, (illustrated right) a popular comic first published in South Africa in 2000, will then be introduced in Kenya next year.
The magazine, poised to become a pan-African phenomenon, has already been launched in Botswana, Namibia and Nigeria.
The Uganda launch will take the comic’s monthly circulation to 1.1 million.
The comic, to be distributed by The New Vision, follows the rags to riches tale of a soccer player Shakes Mokena (Fimbo in Uganda).
It is produced by Strika Entertainment Uganda Limited based in Jinja and sponsored by Caltex, Coca Coca, MTN and Simba Telecom.
The firm’s South African marketing manager Nic Buchanan, said the magazine will come out every month.
“The comic will be like a soap, will have the same characters, same setting but focusing on different topics,” Buchanan said.
Buchanan said the main character is Shakes whose newly acquired status will be the focus in subsequent issues.
