SIR— Your sister paper Etop of December 20 - 26, page 27, published a story by Paul Malinga in which Soroti youth now enjoy a potent drink from Kenya, called “Ndume”. This drink is said to be made from a mixture of maize and a certain insecticide used in preserving stored crops. So far it is known to render men impotent. Do the authorities know about this drink, especially the health authorities? Let the Soroti people wake up because it is not long since another potent gin killed hundreds of people in Kenya and rendered others blind for life, only to discover that it was made from a chemical used for preserving dead bodies. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards should come up and give their findings on this drink Ndume. Some clues Uganda National Bureau of Standards and stakeholders need are that the stuff is sold near Rendezvous Bar only at sh300 a beer bottle and sh800 a jug locally called “crate”. I won’t mention the name of the dealer!Osire IsaleKumi
