In Bwaise and other parts of Kampala, people who use condoms have now started referring to them as ‘third party.’

In Bwaise and other parts of Kampala, people who use condoms have now started referring to them as ‘third party.’I had gone to a shop in Bwaise to buy some necessities when a young man came in, handed the shop-keeper some money and said he wanted a third party.I wondered weather retail shops in Uganda had also entered the business of issuing insurance policies. To my surprise, the shopkeeper handed the young man a packet of Life-Guard condoms. As the man walked away, the shopkeeper brought me up to date with the new slang people were using to identify condoms. When I asked him about the meaning behind the words ‘third party,’ he could not give a definate answer, but speculated that it is the only element that gets involved when the two parties are together.ends
