THE Danish Government is to construct eight new grade one magistrates court buildings countrywide and a high court building in Arua district this year, reports Solomon Muyita.

THE Danish Government is to construct eight new grade one magistrates court buildings countrywide and a high court building in Arua district this year, reports Solomon Muyita.The construction is under the DANIDA-funded programme of strengthening judiciary projects. DANIDA has been supporting the Judiciary projects for the last 10 years, but recently scrapped the international training programme for Judiciary officials. Stephen Musota, the chief registrar of Courts of Judicature and director of Danida-Judiciary programme, told The New Vision last week that they had finished the survey and that work will start in June.Grade one courts are to be built in Kasese, Rukungiri, Kitgum, Nebbi, Busia, Mubende and Nakasongola districts. Musota said there are extension plans to built courts in Iganga and Lira under the programme, but declined to disclose the cost.“This programme has been running since 1995.DANIDA has already constructed a number of new court buildings and rehabilitated others countrywide. Most of them have already been commissioned and are in use,” he said.Musota said they constructed new High Court buildings in the districts of Mbale, Masaka, Mbarara, Fort Portal and Gulu.Chief magistrate and grade one magistrate’s courts were constructed in Nakawa and Makindye in Kampala, Mpigi, Katakwi, Ntungamo, Adjumani and Apac districts. Courts in Tororo and Soroti districts are also being extended.Ends
