By Norman Katende and Fred KaweesiNATIONAL football technical director Guenter Zittel feels Uganda can make it to the 2004 African Nations Cup finals, if they want to.“If we build a team with a good skeleton and have long-time preparations, then there is no way we can fail to top our group,” Zittel said.“What has led to Uganda’s poor performance in international meets is the short training time and lack of consistence in the selection of players,” the German coach added. He said FUFA should have competent managers in charge, motivate players for better results and make funds available to ease preparations. “The players should know their allowance and get it on time on top of having better meals and a coach who knows some philosophy and psychology,” he said.Uganda is placed in Group 13 with Ghana and Rwanda and was last at the finals in 1978.He said preparations should start now with the Cranes assembling at least once a month.Zittel meanwhile believes Uganda’s attempt at making the Athens Olympics in 2004 also needs to be followed closely.“In my opinion, a motivated team will only be as good as its federation. You only have to look at Mali. The national U-20 team will face Sudan in April over two legs.ends
