UGANDA will soon have three of its globally endangered bird species protected from extinction, reports Gerald Tenywa.Eric Sande, a leading bird expert, said the Lappet faced vulture, Grauer’s rush warbler and the Blue Swallow will be protected under a three-year project. He said the project which began recently, would cover action plans for the conservation of eight globally endangered bird species in Africa.Sande said Nature Uganda and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, which are BirdLife International partners in Uganda and UK, were undertaking the project. “We have had two workshops in Uganda and South Africa recently as a way of creating awareness on the project. The actual formulation of plans for different countries begins next month,’’ he said.Sande said the species being targeted for protection were those found in more than one country. “We want to maximise resources and build capacity for making action plans for the protection of birds by different countries,’’ he said.
