THE Government has a programme to provide clean and safe water within the radius of one kilometre to the communities all over the country by the year 2015, the water state minister, Maria Mutagamba, said on Friday.

By Stephen IlungoleTHE Government has a programme to provide clean and safe water within the radius of one kilometre to the communities all over the country by the year 2015, the water state minister, Maria Mutagamba, said on Friday.Mutagamba said some US$900m (sh1.62 trillion) would be required for the provision of clean water to the communities.She said the 15-year project would be run in conjunction with the Government, donors and the Local Government institutions.Officiating at the launching of a public stand pipe constructed by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) at sh35m in Bisanje, eight kilometres from Masaka town, Mutagamba said, “People waste a lot of time moving long distances looking for water. This time frame should be reduced. This should stop.” The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, whose Bukoto Central constituency stretches up to Bisanje village, said Parliament respects the role of the water sector in development. He said this was reflected by the fact that budgetary allocations to the sector are large compared to the other sectors.Ends
