Eighteen-year-old Drucilla Muzira, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Muzira of Jinja, was declared the winner of the Miss Jinja version of the 2002 Miss Uganda beauty pageant. The 5’ 11’’ S6 leaver was the clear favourite among the 11 contestants right from the beginning, and the capacity-crowd loudly and cheerfully showed their support for the judges’ decision. And the new queen cried.“I wish my parents were alive to see this. But my family has been very supportive of me, and for this, I thank them very much,” she said. “This is a very important step for me, and I will do all I can both for Jinja and my country,” Muzira said. The regional final held in Jinja was the third, after Lira and Mbale. The Northern Region winner, Kottie Oola, from Gulu, is also an orphan, while the Miss Eastern final in Mbale last weekend was won by a 20-year-old, also an S6 leaver.Salmha Mirembe was the first runner-up and Janet Mbakire was second runner-up. Five of the 11 contestants were Muslims.Speaking at a press conference after the event, the main judge and Miss Uganda 1990, Jessica Kyeyune, said the competition was getting stiffer as time goes on, but said Muzira had what it takes to be a beauty queen.“Drucilla is a very intelligent girl, and her inner beauty shines through. She has a wonderful attitude, even without training, she has it all,” Kyeyune said. The next regional final will be held in Mbarara on Saturday May 18. The last pre-selection will be held in Kampala on May 25.Ends
