MAKERERE University has increased this year’s entry points for private students.
The cut-off point was decided upon on Monday by the University Selection Board.
The tentative documents seen by The New Vision indicated that entry points for both Science and Arts courses went up compared to the previous year’s.

Over 8,622 direct entrants have been admitted to 110 degree and diploma courses at the 78-year old university.

However, the admission process for the mature age entry is not complete.

The deputy Academic Registrar in-charge of admissions, Obela, said the entry point was raised because of the stiff competition for limited vacancies at the university.

“Competition has been generally up this year and that’s why the cut-off point for some courses went up. Cut-off points are determined by the grades of the applicants. This, therefore, indicates that this year registered more candidates,” Obela said.

Bachelor of Laws and Social Work and Social Administration (SWASA) day programmes topped the Arts courses with 46.6 and 45.5 respectively. Each with 24 and 7 places respectively. Law (evening) is 38.5 with 186 slots.

Mass Communication was toppled and came down to 43.3 from points and has 21 slots.
It was followed by a new course, Human Resource Management, with 41.2 points (day) and 35.8, evening. It has 28 slots.

However, Mass Communication was the most competitive evening course with 39.5. Mass Communication has 70 slots for evening and 21 for day. Development Studies was increased to 37.9 for day with 140 places for day. The cutoff for the evening programme is 34.2, with 175 slots.

Bachelor of Arts with Education is 33.4 and 18.4 for day and evening respectively. It has 405 slots for day and 1,235 slots for evening. Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) is 38.5 with only 19 slots.
Social Sciences came to 36.3 with 178 slots for day and 28.6 for evening with 560 slots. Tourism was reduced to 26.6 with 140 slots for both day and evening.

Bachelor of Electrical Engineering topped the science courses with 40.5 points while Civil Engineering has 33.1, Mechanical Engineering is 30.6, and Architecture, 26.8.

Nursing is 37.3 while Medicine is 35.9 with 28 slots closely followed by Dental Surgery with 35.7 3 slots. Pharmacy was increased to 32.1 with 10 slots. Food Science and technology is 30.2.
