CIVIL Aviation Authority (CAA) is set to shift its headquaters from the Entebbe International Airport terminal to its own home by February 2003.
Ricks Kayizzi reports that according to Eng. Julius Mulumba, the CAA manager, aerodrome, engineering and maintenance services, this move is intended to give space to other commercial operators at the airport, improve business flow and passenger movement.
“We have a workforce of about 600 people, which is remarkably a big number compared to the space at our disposal. Our shift of base is more of a strategic move than anything else,” Mulumba said.
He said this during a visit to the construction site two kilometres away from the airport by members of the Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) recently. Mulumba said the project, being co-ordinated by the Associated Consultants, is to cost sh3b. The new building will have about five floors, which will constitute an elevator, kitchen, cafeteria and a parking lot.
Mulumba said they have put aside another sh250m to upgrade the control tower, construct a tarmac road to the building housing the tower, and recruit more people.
“Reports show that about 75 percent of accidents occur during landing and takeoff. As we pursue our ‘open air’ policy and try to make Entebbe a hub for flights in and out of the region, we take safety to be of outmost importance,” he said. Ends
