ANGE-NOIR Discotheque Sega rally champion Umar Mayanja took to real rallying and posted the second quickest time in the second run of the Independence sprint at Garuga on Sunday.
Mayanja in a Mitsubishi Gallant formerly driven by National champion Charlie Lubega clocked 2.17 minutes — just five seconds behind Lumala. He finished third overall.
Lubega, Justin Beeyendeza and Paul Ssentongo among others have all failed to beat Mayanja’s Sega record of four minutes 00.95 seconds, the 11th in the world.
Lumala was stunned by Mayanja’s strong debut.
“He surprised me. That was an excellent performance for a new man, he even beat people in better cars,†Lumala said.
Abed Lubambula easily sealed the 2002 national motorcycle championship after his close rival Arthur Blick opted out of the Independence Motor cross championship also held at Garuga on Sunday.
Blick who underwent a knee surgery in the USA in August feared to risk. He instead concentrated on the less risky sprint that was run alongside the motor cross on the double track circuit.
Lubambula (Yamaha 250cc), who was five points ahead of Blick on 115, took his tally to a high 175 to clinch a second national title with a race still at hand.
Edirisa Kizza took the second and third runs to win the seniors’ category with 54 points.
Godfrey Matovu (54) and Henry Robinson (39) finished in second and third positions respectively.
Entebbe Rally Club motorcyclists will take on Mbarara riders in a non-championship race at Kakyeka stadium tomorrow as part of Independence Day celebrations.
The event was sponsored by Mambo Bado sports bar.
