Gulu court martial on Wednesday sentenced five soldiers to death by hanging for murder, reports Chris Ochowun in Gulu.

The five soldiers include private Ashraf Gilo, Awana Agali and Charles Hussein all of the 63rd battalion in Adjumani district. The prosecutor said the trio on August 8, 2002 at Andi UPDF detachment in Adjumani took part in a mutiny.

The prosecutor said their action led to the release of Private Angello Debo who had been arrested for murdering Private Vincent Buregeya.

Another soldier who is to hang is Private Philip Igama attached to the reserve force in Adjumani.

The prosecution said Private Igama of Ariwara UPDF detachment on November 2002, maliciously caused the death of Private George Odulejo and Private Charles Drama.

The prosecutor said Private John Lokulu of the 35th battalion in Gulu district, while in Bibia, Gulu district, maliciously caused the death of a civilian identified as Eremania Drama.

The chairman of the divisional court martial, Lt. Col. Sam Okiding, said, “The court has found you guilty. You will suffer death.”

The convicts were defended by the division defence counsel, Lt. Savvy Tumuhimbise.
