IN a new twist, foreign minister James Wapakhabulo now says ex-minister Richard Kaijuka was not coerced by the Government to resign his high profile post at the World Bank in Washington, USA. Wapakhabulo, speaking in Parliament on Thursday, said contrary to claims by some people in Kampala whom he called speculators, Kaijuka did not resign “under duress.”

Moses Byaruhanga, the presidential assistant on political affairs, on August 31, said Kaijuka did not resign on his own.

“As far as we are concerned, it is Hon. Ssendaula who wrote to the World Bank withdrawing Mr. Kaijuka...so the question of him resigning cannot arise,” Byaruhanga said.

But Wapakhabulo told Parliament a different story. “What is on record is that Hon Kaijuka resigned in accordance with the World Bank rules. There was no duress,” he said, adding that there were some officials who went on FM radio stations falsely claiming that Kaijuka had been asked to resign. Wapakhabulo was responding to a question by Ken Lukyamuzi (Rubaga South).
