HUNDREDS of teachers yesterday besieged the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) head office in Kyambogo, seeking recruitment as scouts for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) that kicks off today.

John Eremu reports that over 200 teachers, mainly from Kampala and the surrounding district of Wakiso, stormed the UNEB offices as early as 6:30am, following reports that the board had vacancies for examination scouts.

UNEB recently announced it would deploy about 7,000 spies to curb examination malpractices that characterised the PLE last year. Results of 12,065 candidates were cancelled mainly due to external assistance.

The board spokesperson, Eva Konde, said scouts had already been recruited through the district inspectors of schools and were already deployed. But another senior official said they wanted monitors for on-spot checks not scouts.

The 402,000 PLE candidates begin their examinations this morning with Social Studies and English in the afternoon. They will conclude tomorrow with Mathematics in the morning and Science in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, UNEB has set December 9, for the O’ Level literature paper 208/1 which was cancelled last Wednesday.
