* Africa Under-19 tournament impresses the world body By Ronnie Kintu THE International Cricket Council (ICC) project manager Chris Tetley is impressed by the organisation of ICC Africa under-19 tournament in Kampala. In an exclusive interview with The New Vision, Tetley, who was also the tournament supervisor, said the tournament, which was won by Namibia, had been successful and gave all the credit to Uganda's cricket governing body, UCA. The ICC official said the two grounds that had hosted the matches at Lugogo and Kyambogo were "up to international standards." He remarked that cricket in Uganda will soon have to be commercialised considering the steady rise of the game. "It is a pity that ICC does not enjoy the same autonomy enjoyed by other associations like FIFA (the football governing body) but we are heading in the right direction," Tetley said. "Cricket has made great strides worldwide in the past years and ICC has come up with very many projects to help local bodies make it to the top." Africa development manager Hoosain Ayob said that plans are under-way to start cricket from under 10 years to under 19 level to ensure a progressive development in Africa. ICC officer for East Africa development Tom Tikolo said youngsters all over Africa had displayed talent, but cautioned that a culture of developing the sport in most countries has in place. "Most of the youth are taken up by soccer, Basket ball, rugby and boxing," he said. Ends.
