SUPPORTERS of presidential candidate Yoweri Museveni yesterday clashed with those of Col Kizza Besigye during a campaign procession organised by Major General Salim Saleh in Mbale town, reports Nathan Etengu. Museveni's supporters picked sticks and caned Besigye supporters after the Besigye supporters spread broken bottles on the street which damaged one of the tyres of Salim Saleh's Range Rover. Museveni's supporters who had braved a downpour to march around Mbale town, clashed with Besigye's supporters in front of the main market. Salim Saleh, who had perched himself on the roof of the vehicle, came out of the vehicle and addressed Besigye's supporters assuring them that he was not interested in violence. "I am not interested in violence, we expect campaigns to be peaceful," Saleh said. The supporters chanted 'Afande Major General alagidde akalulu tukawe mukulu we Museveni,' (the Major General has commanded that let the votes be given to Museveni). Saleh addressed over 400 veterans whom he promised to assist with capital to start up a maize mill. He also addressed rallies at the main taxi park, Nakaloke, the Islamic University and municipality chambers where supporters promised to vote for Museveni. National Political Commissar James Wapakhabulo attended. Ends
