Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) yesterday picked Joseph Kabuleta and Badru Zziwa acting general secretary and organising secretary, reports Douglas Mazune. New Vision sub editor Kabuleta and Monitor senior reporter Zziwa will fill the gap left by Francis Batte Jr and Peter Ekarot who died August 28 in a motor accident. The two died together with USPA vice chairman Kenneth Matovu and senior member Leo Kabunga while returning from a meeting in Jinja. Kabuleta, Zziwa and treasurer Stewart Kabale will name Matovu’s replacement. The journalists sitting at Tourist Hotel brainstormed on a welfare fund for the families of fallen sportswriters. The junior athletics team, meanwhile, won the USPA August award for their impressive show at the Mauritius-hosted Africa junior athletics championship. Boniface Toroitich won gold in 5000m and silver in 10000m while Mary Bacia bagged silver in 800m. The team polled 685 points to beat Uganda’s golf team that won the East Africa challenge cup and Lukanga boxing tied in second position on 405. Rally ace Charlie Lubega who won the dfcu bank rally was beaten to fourth position by 10 points. Junior tennis players were commended for winning 15 medals in the ITF tennis U-14 circuit in Kenya.
