‘FUFA polls a sham’

FUFA constitutional review committee chairman John Semanobe has said that it was dangerous for football to hold the FUFA elections under the current constitution.

By Daniel Saire FUFA constitutional review committee chairman John Semanobe has said that it was dangerous for football to hold the FUFA elections under the current constitution. “There are urgent issues which member associations have recommended for immediate amendment and without them, the elections would be a sham,” he said. He said that district associations want regions to have more powers to plan and implement projects that would develop football. They also want FUFA to send 30% of the annual FIFA grant of $250,000 (sh440m) to regions. Sports state minister Okello Oryem stopped the discussion of the constitution during the Saturday annual general meeting. “The document is still raw and I saw no reason of tabling it,” he said. Oryem added that he wanted people without any interests in the FUFA polls to take charge of the process. But Semanobe denied that he was using the constitution meetings to campaign for the FUFA top job. He said he had never declared his intentions to stand though he could not rule it out. He explained that he had asked FUFA to provide a member to accompany the committee during its tours as a measure of precaution, but they refused. The general assembly appointed the committee on October 21 last year with instructions to finish work in five months. ends
