THE Uganda Land Commission has told landowners affected by the Bujagali hydroelectric power project not to leave their land until they are fully compensated, reports Richard Mutumba. A statement issued at the weekend by the commission chairman, Mr. Besweri Mulondo, reminded all land owners or interested parties that as per Ugandan law, they continue to own and occupy their land until payment of fair and adequate compensation. All affected people should therefore go about their normal activities in the project site until such compensation has been paid, Mulondo said. The commission said preparations for the prompt payment of a fair and adequate compensation for their land, crops and developments were continuing. "These preparations involve an extensive number of processes which are being followed to satisfy Ugandan law. The commission assures all such affected people that as soon as the processes are complete, payment of compensation will be embarked on," a statement said. Construction of the US$500m 250MW power dam at Bujagali by the AES Nile Power is expected to begin in April next year. Ends.
