By Kezio D. Musoke PRESIDENTIAL aspirant Nasser Sebaggala yesterday denounced the Democratic Party (DP) National Council meeting planned for today, saying it was "ill-timed and pushed by ill-intentioned people." "As a prominent and dedicated DP member, I find it unfortunate and disheartening about the developments in the DP. The facilitation of the meeting has remained suspicious not only to the leaders but also the members of the party," Sebaggala said. Addressing a press conference at his Bugolobi residence, Sebaggala criticised the party secretary general, Mariano Drametu, saying he had usurped the powers of those meant to convene the meeting. Drametu and the party's vice-president, Zachary Olum, earlier this week called for the meeting to elect party president Paul Ssemogerere's successor. Olum and deputy chairman Hajji Ali Serunjogi on Thursday evening issued a statement saying the council would convene at Namboole Stadium as scheduled. "Drametu has voluntarily confessed that even those coming for the meeting are not members of the party," Sebaggala said. "From the available information, it is quite obvious that the meeting lacks the goodwill required," he added. Ssemogerere, who was supposed to tender in his resignation at the meeting, said on Thursday that he would not attend the meeting because it was "unconstitutional and dubiously funded." Mystery still surrounds the source of sh70m donated to fund the meeting. "All DP members should desist from attending this meeting," Sebaggala said. He said the party's priority was the liberation of the country from what he called Museveni's dictatorship. Ends.
