CHARLES Serunjogi and Godfrey Nyakana fought a bitter war for Kampala Central Division in 2006. The war ended with Nyakana flooring Serunjogi and leaving him on the verge of death.

On the voting day, Serunjogi was beaten up and stabbed by a mob. He was admitted to Nsambya Hospital for several days. On recovery, he dragged Nyakana to court but lost. Since then, Serunjogi has been involved in business.

The two are back to the political ring, along with Kibedi Nsegumire and Bbosa Kiyingi, both independents inclined to the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) also fronted Wilberforce Kyambadde, its secretary for investment, for the seat. But sources say Kyambadde is not doing well because FDC’s presence in the city centre is not strong. Thus, the race appears to be between Nyakana and Serunjogi.

Those who support Serunjogi say when he was in charge of the division, he ensured that the city was clean and potholes were fixed. Some believe he will get sympathy votes for the pain he endured during the 2006 elections.

He is also likely to reap from the popularity of DP in Kampala since he is the party’s flag-bearer. Kampala is DP’s stronghold, especially in the lower local councils.

However, Serunjogi’s financial muscle is not comparable to Nyakana’s. It is hard to win an election in Kampala without spending significantly.

Nyakana has also used his tenure to entrench some of his campaign promises of 2006. However, some of his supporters have turned against him, accusing him of becoming inaccessible after they voted for him.

Nyakana’s challenge is that two NRM-leaning independents will bag some of the votes that might have gone to him. The two are Bbosa, who competed against Serunjogi in 2001 and lost and Nsegumire. The latter is backed by Mohammad Nsereko, a popular NRM leader in Kampala.

Nyakana is not in good books with Nsereko, who is one of the kingmakers in the Kampala NRM camp.
