THE army and police have unearthed a military cache in Yumbe and Nebbi district in which 23 tortoise grenades, 11 anti-tank grenades, 27 pieces of Anti-Personnel Mines, three full magazines of sub-machine gun were got.

According to a statement by the UPDF 4th division spokesman, Capt. Peter Mugisa, on Saturday, the military equipment was discovered by children who had gone to collect firewood in the bush.

He said the military ware could have been abandoned by the West Nile Bank Front II rebels during the insurgency. And were got under big trees at Aliba village in Yumbe district.

The army publicist explained that in Nebbi district, one 82mm mortar, two RPC shells and four 54mm recoilless bombs were also got by the army.

“We really commend people’s vigilance and informing the army on time about these dangerous weapons mugisa said.
He said if the children were not vigilant, they would have been injured by the weapons like it happened in Obongo county in Moyo district.

Mugisa explained that four children died and seven others got injured when a grenade exploded in Obongi sub-county, recently. According to the Police, the children got the grenade in a valley while playing.

He appealed to the former IDPs in Acholi sub-region who are returning to their formerly abandoned villages after the LRA war to be vigilant and report any strange object to the security organs to avoid death and injuries.

Members of the community complained that many unexploded military weapons were abandoned in the villages.

In a related development, Mugisa warned that the army will not allow any oppsition politicians to hold any kind of demonstration in the region.

“We have received information that opposition politicians who lost in the presidential election want to come to West Nile region to incite the people to demonstrate. We need to remind them that elections were free and fair and people chose the leaders of their choice,” he stated.

The army publicist added that it is the mandate of the army to safeguard and secure people’s will, saying people in the north should disregard the opposition call to cause violence in the region through demonstration.

Mugisa appealed to the population to guard the peace and tranquility and not to go back to the turmoil days.
