THE formbook was respected in the quarterfinal of the Castle Lite Uganda Tennis Open as pre-tournament favourites Duncan Mugabe and Allan Cooper both sailed through to the semi-finals.

Ugandan star Mugabe needed less than an hour to see off Rwandan Olivier Nkunda 6-1 6-1 while Kenyan Cooper overcame a spirited challenge from another Rwandan Jean Claude Gasigwa to get on course for a possible final with Mugabe tomorrow.

Cooper who lost to Mugabe in the Kenya Open final in Nairobi last Sunday, recovered from a set down to eject Gasigwa 2-6 6-2 6-3 in an exciting encounter that saw both players complain about the distractive camera clicks from photo journalists.

Cooper will be up against Rwandan Dieu-Donne Habiyambere in the semi-final today. Habiyambere eliminated top seed Herbert Buyinza 6-1 6-4 to advance to the last four.

Mugabe will take on the winner between Kenyan Denis Ochieng and lanky Ugandan teenager David Oringa, 18.

The encounter between Oringa and Ochieng was interrupted by rain and will be completed this morning.

Ochieng took the first set 7-5 and in the second Oringa recovered from 2-5 to win it 7-5. Then rain halted play while the Kenyan led 5-3 in the third set.

Unseeded Oringa who defeated Kenyan star Francis Rogoi to get to the quarterfinals seeks to stretch his fairytale.
