MANY had placed their bet on Moses Kipsiro. But Stephen Kiprotich became Uganda’s best performer, settling for sixth place and an individual sh6m cash prize as the World Cross Country Championships concluded in Punta Umbria, Spain yesterday.

The Uganda senior team of Kiprotich, Kipsiro, Geoffrey Kusuro, Dickson Huru and Moses Kibet finished third overall to win a bronze medal and a cash prize of sh27m.

The senior women team that came sixth, won sh8m.

Kiprotich hung on with the lead pack as Uganda’s and one of the race favourites Moses Kipsiro –– who had kept with the front four for some time, fell back after experiencing a back pain.

With Kipsiro struggling Kiprotich would prove no match for the leaders in the final stretch even though his was a respectable finish.

Kipsiro hung on to finish 11th overall before being taken for treatment.

“I cannot say whether it started in the race. We shall get more information after he returns from the treatment,” said Uganda athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru. Junior runner Jacob Araptany represented Kipsiro at the team medal awarding ceremony.

“I just do not know what happened,” said Kipsiro.

Other athletes on the team also complained of back pain and the coach expressed concern.
