RESIDENTS of Nyendo division in Masaka municipality have expressed concern over the increasing insecurity in the area.

The residents presented a list of 10 suspected criminals in a heated emergency local security meeting presided over by the division chairman, Gonzaga Kisirinya at Kasana grounds on Sunday.

The meeting, attended by the officer in charge of Nyendo Police Station, Patrick Maikura, resolved to stop mob justice against suspects.

Earlier, the residents had bought fuel to attack suspected criminals after efforts to have them evicted from the area failed.

“Work closely with the Police, do not resort to mob justice. The crime rate will gradually reduce,” Maikura said.

He said fighting marijuana, drug traffickers and other crimes required collective efforts of the Police, LCs and the residents.

Leonard Ssekitoleko, a local trader, said he had lost huge sums of money and over 10 bags of maize flour to the thugs who broke into his shop in Nyendo.

“We are disgusted, the thieves steal all sorts of things. I lost my business,” he said.

Students from Centenary High School, Nserester Vocational Secondary Complex and Exodus Secondary School, who rent rooms in Nyendo, said they were afraid of attending night classes due to the insecurity in the area.

“We have on several occasions landed into ambushes of hooligans who steal the little money on us. They even take our books,” Johnson Tinkamanyire from Nserester said.

Kisirinya advised LCs and landlords of the area to register and constantly monitor all their tenants, especially those whom they suspect of involvement in criminal activities.
