KYAMBOGO University Guild campaigns are a replica of national elections. The seven major political parties in the country are involved in the campaigns of their flag bearers. Nine candidates have been nominated to contest. Voting will take place in a weeks. Brian Mayanja talked to the candidates on what they plan to do if elected.

DEUSPEDIT KIWULA
I have come to fight for the students’ rights. They are voiceless. The previous Guild governments have not helped to change the situation at this University.

LAWRENCE KATUMBA
There should be round table discussions between the administration and the students’ governing body. Sanitation issues should be managed by the Guild Government like it was before. I have to address the issue of limited chairs and small lecture rooms. Those who fail to raise tuition fees should be helped by setting up a Guild fund.

PATRICK KILAMA
I want to fight for the increase of students’ allowances. Cleaning should be done every evening, not during class hours. The administration needs to be strict on lecturers. Most lecture rooms, halls of residences, toilets do not have lights. We will also lobby for more generators.

OLIVE NAMAZZI
The Government must intervene in solving the problems of Kyambogo University. The facilities are not enough yet the population is growing. Having been a head perfect at Gayaza High School, I have the experience to steer the guild. We need to put the administration on pressure to always release exams on time.

PAUL MBABAZI
I want to be a bridge between the administration and students. Right now we do not have open communication. The university is sitting on a time bomb if the current problems are not solved. To release results, it takes three or four months, at times with so many errors.

BRIGHTON NUHAMANYA
We need to ask the Government for more funds. The student population is increasing, yet the facilities are very few. The Guild Government must be given the mandate to supervise the cleaning exercise.

ENOCK NOKRACH
This is the only public university without updated books. Our lecturers tell us to visit Makerere University, to do research. Faculties have few computers and yet every first year student pays computer fees. The worst part of it, is the majority of students do not know how to use a computer.

MARVIN MUBIRU
The university administration needs to revisit the issue of feeding. The food served at the university is of poor quality. Secondly, students are not able to pay this high tuition fees. A student on the private scheme has to virtually pay for everything, including accommodation. The university administration should be lenient on private students.
