GOVERNMENT will soon put in place a temporary committee to oversee the national boxing team’s preparations for the forthcoming All Africa Games in Mozambique.

This follows a stalemate in local amateur boxing where two groups are fighting for the leadership. The infighting led to Uganda’s exclusion from the last Commonwealth Games, a scenario government wants solved ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.

Stakeholders were informed of the decision in stormy meeting at Lugogo yesterday. “This committee drawn from you stakeholders will draw a roadmap for the forthcoming international competitions,” explained National Council of Sports (NCS) member Charles Egou.

Egou however stressed that the committee’s lifespan would be brief pending arrival of an AIBA team to settle the impasse. The committee follows a ministerial directive that NCS takes over the national team.

Egou, who read a statement from sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi, added that government’s position took into consideration boxers.

“They have been starved of international competition. There is no reason as to why they should suffer because of boxing politics.”

Egou noted that much as government recognized the Godfrey Nyakana led executive, they had failed to get recognition of world amateur boxing body AIBA.

“You should remember that it is the same minister that organized the process that brought Nyakana in office” Egou reminded a group of officials who accused the minister of being unfair.

Former UABF boss and AIBA referee/judge David Agong argued that it was prudent for NCS to ensure that UABF was compliant with AIBA.
