IT is the current driver of economic and social development and for this reason, everyone, especially the new generation, is urged to embrace and derive maximum benefit from technology.

However, this has not been possible in a country like Uganda, and Africa in general, where accessibility and use of technology are still very limited. To enjoy the full benefits of technology, the young generation needs to be helped to access digital services for individual and community progress.

It is against this background that some digital communication organisations, Multichoice and Eutel, have initiated an award to inspire innovative thinking among secondary and high school students, and create awareness on how science and technology can be applied to everyday life for the benefit of mankind. The competition will also show the many ways that satellite has already impacted the development of the African continent.

The awards take the form of a competition open to students aged 14 to 19 years in 42 countries. The students will be required to write an essay or design a poster on satellite technology and how it can assist further development of their communities, country or the African continent.

Country winners vying for the overall prize will go on to compete at an international level, adjudicated by an international panel on September 12.

The overall winner will then be invited to watch a live rocket launch and to Eutelsat’s headquarters in France. Merit award winners will win a trip to Johannesburg to see DStv’s technical facilities and television studios at the MultiChoice Africa offices. They will also tour the Mindset education broadcasting facilities.
