ANNET Negesa is the lone Ugandan standing at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

On a day when medal hopes of five Ugandans were shattered, Negesa kept alive her country’s chances of a podium finish by sailing to today’s semi-finals of the women’s 800m. She clocked two minutes 02.75 seconds to win her heat. Jacob Araptany later showed great fighting spirit as he put up a hard fight only to be let down by inexperience in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final.

Araptrany,19, who was leading with a lap to go, lost grip of the race with about 200 meters left. He finished sixth in 8: 16.67 seconds while his team-mate Benjamin Kiplagat was tenth in 8:22.21 in a race won by Kenya’s Ezekiel Kemboi.
