SUNDAY evening has always been a great day to chill at the beach, where you get to take in the sun setting over the waters view,  relax, unwind, swim and catch up with friends.

Then there’s the big fried fish, beach-goers love to devour. Now add to that mix an engaging function like the annual Pearl of Africa Deejaying and you will have the complete picture of what revellers at Lido Beach, Entebbe last Sunday, were in for.

The beach-goers enjoyed the additional luxury of watching some of the best local Dee Jay talent tussle it out for the coveted Pearl of Africa Disc Jokey of the year award.

Over 10 very talented disc spinners participated in the event that saw a one, Charles Semwanja, who does gigs for the Entebbe road-based Nyondo Pub and Club emerge winner with Sean Smith, an American soldier based in Uganda and Disc Jockey back in his native city of Los Angeles in the US coming in as the runner up.

Senwamja’s seamless mix of old and new school music got the crowd cheering wildly on their feet and thus voting for him in big numbers.

Sean Smith the runner-up had a mix of garage, techno and house music which was quite unique to the crowd’s ears but still entertaining enough to get him second place.

The DJ awards according Trans Event’s CEO Anthony Yawe alias DJ Tony, the organiser, are aimed at rewarding the Best of local DJ talent and also market the little known, but equally talented DJs through the exposure and platform they give them.

Semwanja proved he was a class apart, when, in the final round, he mixed a whole eight songs in only one and a half minutes and by the time the events emcees Esco and Club Silk’s MC Percy called up the awards boss to give the winner their prize, it was so unanimously clear Semwanja had won that any other choice would have raised eyebrows.

Last year’s winner, DJ Mozelo, entertained the crowd with his acclaimed music mixing skills after the awards as the evening came to a conclusion.
