Police in Wandegeya is  holding a Makerere University lecturer for allegedly attacking his wife with acid following a domestic dispute.

Dr. Faisal Buyinza (40), a lecturer of Economics attached to the department of Economic Theory and Analysis was detained on Tuesday at Wandegeya police station in connection with attempted murder.

His wife, Hanifa Nakiryowa, an employee of UNICEF, is  admitted to Ward 2C in Mulago Hospital with severe burns.

She was admitted together with her one-and half-year old daughter, Zurahiya Buyinza who also sustained injuries.

The Officer in Charge CID at Wandegeya, Herbert Wanyoto said that Dr. Buyinza denied the accusations but the wife insisted that he had a hand in the attack following a prolonged domestic misunderstanding.

Detectives Tuesday accompanied Dr. Buyinza to Mulago Hospital for treatment after he sustained acid burns around his arm.

According to Wanyoto, the incident occurred at about 8.00PM on Monday at Dr. Buyinza’s apartment in Mugenyi Flats, Makerere University.

In her statement, Nakiryowa said the couple had a misunderstanding with her husband three weeks ago, accusing her of having extra marital affairs. She forced to leave the home and had been staying with a relative.

She told police that the husband wanted them to discuss their relationship and was asking her to return home.

“He called me on phone and asked me to return home and pick the children that had been staying with him. I came in the evening and knocked at his door but he was not opening until a person found me standing by the doorway and poured some liquids in my face,” she told the police.

Dr. Buyinza however denied the accusations and said though they had a misunderstanding, he wanted her to return home and had no knowledge of the attack.

He accused the wife of infidelity and alleged that she had been harassing him.

“We have always settled our issues with the intervention of family members and religious elders at Wandegeya Mosque but this time I asked her to leave my home,” he told police.

Wanyoto said the police investigations would continue.
