A commissioner in the Ministry of Works and Transport on Monday told court that the former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya was not involved in the award of contract to Motorcare Uganda Limited.

George William Okurut was giving evidence as a principal prosecution witness in charges of abuse of office and fraudulent practice against Bukenya and Motorcare Uganda Limited.

Bukenya and Motorcare Uganda Limited are jointly indicted for both offences and are appearing before the head of the Anti-Corruption Court, Justice Paul Mugamba.

Being led by Sydney Asubo, from the Inspectorate of Government, who was assisted by Sarah Birungi, Okurut said that the sub-contract committee of the Ministry of Works and Transport awarded the contract to Motorcare (U) Ltd to import 80 motorcycles that were used by the police during the 2007 CHOGM conmference.

Okurut told the court that he led a delegation of Government officials that included Albert Akobuku from State House and a police officer John Ndugtuse purposely to inspect the BMW motorcycles that were going to be used by the Police during the CHOGM Conference.

The witness told the court that while in Germany, they were not able to inspect the motorbikes because they had already been shipped to Uganda.

However, when under intense cross-examination by defence lawyer MacDosman Kabega, who appeared with Enos Tumusiime for Bukenya, admitted that their going to Germany caused financial loss to Government, because they failed in their duty.
