FORMER Chief of Staff (UPDF/NRA) Maj. Gen. Samuel James Nanyumba has died

FORMER Chief of Staff (UPDF/NRA) Maj. Gen. Samuel James Nanyumba has died. Aged 71, he passed on this morning at Mulago Referral hospital-Kampala

Soft spoken Nanyumba , one of the celebrated Ugandan soldiers and  from Iganga served Museveni as chief of staff and then ambassador to Rwanda.

Nanyumba, with training in telecommunication engineering from Europe, joined the NRA long after it had captured power.

But he had made contact with Museveni much earlier - during the UNLF years of 1979-'80 and under the Save Uganda Movement, 1977-'79.

Part of the old colonial-trained officer corps he was always smartly dressed with neatly polished shoes, one journalist remarked. He was a man of few words.

In January 2005 , he was promoted from Brigadier to Maj Gen and  then retired from the army.

In July last year, Maj. Gen. Nanyumba, was part of the crowd of ex-servicemen who turned up for the registration exercise in eastern region conducted by the Ministry of Defence.  The exercise was held in Kakindu Stadium in Jinja District.

Between 1980-85 he was member of the Fourth parliament, having served in the National Consultative Council representing the Army.
