The Kotido LCV Chairman Callistus Adome Lokwii has warned the Karimojong against selling all their food cheaply.

Speaking during the districts   belated World Food day celebrations in Kotido town October 27th, Lokwii said Karamoja for the first time in eight years has received a bumper harvest and that the Karimojong were busy selling food and engaging in cultural festivities.

“People are now busy celebrating, with booze, others selling food and marring second or third wives”, Lokwi said.
He added that others are celebrating and remembering all funeral rites and cultural festivities that were not performed during the past three or four years when there was no food.

He advised them to store their food until the next harvest is due.
He told Local Councilors to stop any mass selling of food saying that each household should contribute one sack of sorghum or maize seed to a central cereal bank in the parishes as a food security measure.

The Kotido District woman Member of Parliament, Margret Aleper attributed the bumper harvest to efforts from different stakeholders like the NAADS Programme and Office of the first lady and Minister for Karamoja Janet Museveni , whom she said had opened large chunks of land for the people under the tractor scheme.

“I am also delighted to see that there has been a good harvest in Karamoja. And my advice is that the people should stop selling food cheaply to business people who are now flocking our district in big trucks but will return the same food to sell at exorbitant prizes:, Aleper said.

The World food day celebrations were characterized by exhibitions from farmers and cultural performances with the theme: “Food prizes- from crisis to stability.
