Police blocks FDC's Besigye

Oct 18, 2011

Opposition leader Kizza Besigye was briefly arrested on Tuesday as he took part in a "walk-to-work" protests

AFTER his release from Kasangati Police Station Tuesday morning and driven back to his home in a police van, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Dr. Kizza Besigye escaped minutes later through the back gate door of his Kasangati house.

Police pursued Besigye and re-arrested him at a nearby swamp which is about half a kilometer from his home.

He is being kept in a police van guarded by 5 police patrols at the swamp. It is not clear whether police will again detain him at police or drive him to his home.

The situation in Kasangati town is still tense as police are engaged in running battles with a small group of rioters. One person is reported to have been injured by a rubber bullet.

Police first arrested Besigye today morning as he left his home at Kasangati in Wakiso district to his office in Kampala. Kasangati is located 9.0 miles (14.5 km) north of Kampala on the Kampala-Gayaza Highway.

This follows a revived plan by the Action for Change (A4C) pressure group to stage a week-long work-to-work demonstration. The protest kicked-off on Monday. Police, however, deployed heavily and the protests flopped.

A crowd of Besigye supporters in pursuit of their arrested leader clashed with Police, resulting in clouds of tear-gas filling the air on a drizzly morning and dispersing the agitated mob.
